Presence/Absence Surveys

Our experienced team of biologists follows USFWS established methodologies to assess the presence of the Desert Tortoise. 

This guideline offers suggestions for the survey process used to find out whether desert tortoises are present or absent and how many there are. This applies to projects taking place in areas where these tortoises live, and it also outlines a standard method for sharing the survey findings. The information collected through these steps serves three main purposes:

1. It helps decide how much consultation is needed with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the relevant state agency.

2. It assists in determining the level of unintentional disturbance or harm to desert tortoises that might happen due to proposed projects. This aligns with the rules set by the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and the laws of the state.

3. It aids in efforts to minimize and prevent any such disturbance or harm to desert tortoises.
