Inaugural Temblor Legless Lizard Workshop: A Field Day in the Sand

San Joaquin Valley, April 9, 2025
The San Joaquin Valley Chapter of The Wildlife Society hosted its first-ever Temblor Legless Lizard Workshop on April 9, 2025, bringing together a full roster of biologists, students, and conservation professionals. The morning kicked off at the Bakersfield BLM office, where expert herpetologist Dr. Ted Papenfuss gave an engaging overview on the ecology, behavior, and identification of Anniella alexanderae. Attendees also received updates on the species’ current protections, survey protocols, and status under consideration for listing. Sequoia Sandwiches provided box lunches as the group transitioned to the field for the second half of the day.
The hands-on session began with habitat assessments and instruction on coverboard installation—key methods for detecting these cryptic, fossorial reptiles. Participants visited two field sites, though locating the second one, Lowkern Ecological Reserve, presented some navigational challenges. The effort was well rewarded: one large Temblor legless lizard aka "The Little Biter" was observed, marking a highlight for many in the group.
Special thanks to the San Joaquin Valley Chapter of The Wildlife Society for organizing this landmark event, and to Dr. Ted Papenfuss for generously sharing his expertise and leadership in the field. Additional thanks to our outstanding lecturers—Sarah Bahm for her detailed presentation on the CESA listing process and Ashley Pryor for her practical insights on survey design and implementation. The workshop concluded with dusty boots, sun-soaked smiles, and renewed enthusiasm for conserving one of California’s most elusive reptiles.
