Trapping the Mohave Ground Squirrel: Fremont-Kramer Study Recap

2025
From May 18–29, a 10-day live-trapping and recapture study took place in the Fremont-Kramer region, led by the Mohave Ground Squirrel Conservation Council (MGSCC). The effort began with a full-day training for biologists from BLM, USGS, consulting firms, and nonprofits, covering pit tagging, ear tagging, and standardized survey techniques. This collaboration brought together professionals and volunteers to monitor one of California’s most elusive and threatened desert species.
Trapping grids were established in key habitat zones, with daily checks and data collection following CDFW protocols. Each squirrel was processed, tagged, and released, contributing to long-term population tracking in this critical habitat corridor. The Fremont-Kramer region remains a stronghold for the species but faces ongoing threats from development and habitat loss.
MGSCC relies on public support to continue this important work. Whether you can volunteer, donate, or help spread the word, your involvement matters. Visit [mgsconservation.org](https://lnkd.in/g9GgZHUq) to learn more and get involved.
