The 71st Annual Meeting of the Western Section of the Wildlife Society

Participating in the 71st Annual Meeting of the Western Section of The Wildlife Society, held in Rohnert Park, CA, from February 5 to 9, 2024, was an enriching experience. Over 500 professionals, including wildlife experts, managers, students, and academics, gathered to discuss and address various challenges in wildlife conservation. The event provided a platform for networking, learning, and professional growth, fostering a sense of community among attendees.

Throughout the conference, there were numerous opportunities to engage with fellow participants, learn about emerging wildlife science, and explore career development resources. From workshops to interactive sessions, the event was filled with valuable insights and knowledge-sharing sessions. Additionally, the serene setting of the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Sonoma Wine Country provided the perfect backdrop for both professional discussions and leisure activities, further enhancing the overall experience of the 2024 Annual Meeting.

One highlight of my experience was volunteering with the Mohave Ground Squirrel Council at their booth. This newly established nonprofit organization is dedicated to ensuring the perpetual survival of the Mohave Ground Squirrel, a little-known species found only in the Western Mohave Desert. Despite its low profile, the Mohave Ground Squirrel plays a crucial role in its ecosystem. As an advocate for wildlife conservation, I was proud to support the council's efforts to raise awareness and garner support for the protection of this species.
