Wings on the Ground: Burrowing Owl Workshop (Winter Survey) 2024

From December 1st to 5th, 2024, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Burrowing Owl Workshop hosted by Fauna del Noroeste and Forde Biological Consultants in Ensenada, Baja California. This immersive experience provided a deep dive into the fascinating winter behaviors of the western burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia hypugaea). The workshop allowed me to explore habitat characteristics, identify threats, and develop strategies for effective conservation, all while collaborating with other dedicated professionals and enthusiasts.

Over five days, we conducted daytime and evening field surveys, habitat assessments, and burrow evaluations across six unique sites, including Punta Banda and the Sendero trail. Together, we observed 41 burrowing owls and other notable species like least terns and snowy plovers. Spending more than 27 hours in the field, we followed protocol-level surveys to sharpen our skills in identifying active burrows and assessing habitat conditions. It was enlightening to better understand the challenges facing burrowing owls, including urbanization, habitat loss, and the decline of small mammals that create their burrows.

This workshop was especially meaningful given the burrowing owl's candidacy for protection under the California Endangered Species Act (CESA). I left feeling better equipped with practical tools to aid in their conservation and inspired by the dedication of everyone involved. Beyond the technical training, I formed meaningful connections with others who share a passion for wildlife preservation. It was an unforgettable experience that reinforced the importance of safeguarding these remarkable birds and their habitats.
